Alcohol is like any other drug in that people can easily become dependent upon it. When an individual spends a prolonged time drinking large amounts of alcohol, they will more often than not end up developing a dependence on alcohol. When this happens, any attempts at getting sober or stopping drinking alcohol will lead to withdrawal symptoms.

As Divine Detox explains, detox occurs when someone actively breaks their body’s cycle of dependency on a substance. It is a critical part of recovery, and only once they have undergone detox can they actually make proper progress in their journey to sobriety. Considering how critical detoxing is, it is important to understand that anyone going through this process will also be affected by Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome.

Much like prescription drug withdrawal, alcohol withdrawal syndrome means that those recovering from addiction will experience a combination of physical and emotional symptoms. These may range in intensity from minor to severe in nature. Whatever the severity of the symptoms may be, during this period, those recovering should be monitored since some of these symptoms can be life-threatening.

Minor withdrawal symptoms are often experienced within the first 24 hours after alcohol was last consumed. Although they cause some discomfort, they are not usually dangerous. These include tremors, shaky hands, anxiety, stress, insomnia, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, higher sensitivity to light, sound, and touch and more.

Around 10 to 72 hours after an individual has last consumed alcohol, they are likely to start experiencing major withdrawal symptoms, which are a lot more severe and distressing. These can be both physical and psychological, and they will affect the person’s ability to function. These symptoms include tremors that affect the entire body, visual hallucinations (seeing things that are not there), auditory hallucinations (hearing things that are not there), high blood pressure, severe vomiting, intense sweating and more. In the long term, it can also include poor memory, poor decision-making capabilities and possibly aggressive or violent behavior.

Alcohol withdrawal can also cause seizures. These seizures occur in about 9% of people who have never had a seizure in the past. They are colloquially referred to as ‘rum fits’ and can even be the only symptom of alcohol withdrawal that someone has. A seizure can occur anywhere between 6 to 48 hours after the last drink — and will be brief and generalized in nature. Typically, they only last for around 6 hours, but it does not mean that they should be dismissed. Someone who is suffering seizures due to alcohol withdrawal should be closely monitored so that they do not have accidental injuries related to the effects of a seizure.

Those who are experiencing severe withdrawal may also start to have delirium tremens (DTs) between 48 to 96 hours after they have stopped drinking alcohol. This rapid onset of confusion is often accompanied by shakes, shivers, irregular heart rate and sweating. People may also hallucinate. Occasionally, a very high body temperature or seizures may result in death.
